Les Grands Ballets Canadiens presents under the artistic direction of Ivan Cavallari two works of contrasting styles by two great European choreographers. Symphony No. 7 by the German Uwe Scholz (1958-2004) and Cantata by the Italian Mauro Bigonzetti (1964). Strength and delicacy, rhythm and subtlety are combined in a vibrant double program.
At Symphony No. 7the dancers enter into a symbiotic relationship with Beethoven's music. With their athletic prowess and unison dance geometry they form a succession of different colors and rhythms. Uwe Scholz, dance director of the Leipzig Opera, liked to create choreographies for large symphonic works. His choreographic adaptation of the Seventh, originally created for the Stuttgart Ballet, is considered his masterpiece. It attests to his delicacy, inventiveness and exceptional musicality.
The Cantata with its visceral and passionate gestural language evokes the rugged beauty of the Mediterranean and embraces the colors of the South. The voices and music of the four singers on stage immerse the ten pairs of dancers in the festive atmosphere of southern Italy, to the sound of tambourine and castanets.
The piece is inspired by Italian music of the 18th and 19th centuries.

BIOGRAPHIES
Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, based in Montreal, is a major company dedicated to the development of dance in all its forms, based on classical ballet. Under the artistic direction of Ivan Cavallari, some forty-five Canadian and international dancers, accompanied at its headquarters by the Orchestre Les Grands Ballets, bring to the stage the great classics of ballet as well as the creations and repertoire of established and emerging contemporary artists.
Through the excellence of its productions and the scope of its cultural and social actions, the company seeks to inspire discovery and evoke emotions, stimulate the imagination, transmit a passion for dance and create a lasting impact.
Ivan Cavallari received his initial training at the Ballet School of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. His teachers recognized his talent by awarding him a scholarship to the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow in 1981, where he continued his training until 1983.
From 1984 to 1985 she danced at the La Scala Ballet School before joining the Stuttgart Ballet in 1986. He danced all the principal roles in John Cranko's ballets and regularly performed the latter's works with the Royal Ballet Covent Garden in London. From 2007 to 2012, he was Artistic Director of the West Australian Ballet, Australia's oldest dance company. In 2013, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Ballet de l'Opéra National du Rhin.
He currently takes over Les Grands Ballets as Artistic Director from the 2017-2018 season. As a choreographer, he creates new pieces such as Presto-Detto, Giselle and Romeo & Juliet, taking the company's repertoire in a decidedly classical direction while remaining anchored in modernity.
