Inspired by Chueca y Valverde's El año pasado por agua ( 1888), La zarzuela de los paraguas is a version that incorporates musical themes and plot lines from other works of the so-called "género chico", as popular as: La gran vía or Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente.
El año pasado por agua is full of popular characters and comic references alluding to that year 1888, when it rained non-stop all over the country. A satirical painting of Spain at the turn of the century that was premiered with great success in Madrid's Nuevo Apolo theater in March 1889. Now it comes to Pamplona in its 21st century version, La Zarzuela de los paraguas, with the desire to recover the best of zarzuela: music, lyric and theater, with a fresh, fun, dynamic and current look.
This Zarzuela de los Paraguas, a contemporary zarzuela, is the result of the collaboration of students and professionals. It involves the University of Navarra Symphony Orchestra, the University of Navarra Choir, the groups of the Theatrical Training Plan and the Performing Arts Production Program, students of the Degree in Design(ETSA) and the Gayarre Association of Friends of the Opera(AGAO).

SYNOPSIS
The zarzuela of the umbrellas tells the story of a country flooded by the adversities of the weather, also by the political tensions and the concerns of the citizens for matters of diverse nature that worry everyone; the contribution, agriculture, taxes, circulation in the city, among other issues. The character of the New Year arrives in the city of Pamplona with the purpose of putting an end to all these evils, promising to put an end to the heavy rains that flood the city, bringing back the sun and, with it, the solution to all the problems.
A UNIQUE PROJECT
A hallmark of Campus Creativo, the activities offered to students often provide the opportunity to participate in creative and artistic projects in close contact with artists and professionals in the cultural sector.
On this occasion, La Zarzuela de los Paraguas is a unique and interdisciplinary proposal that brings together teams of very different nature. It involves the University of Navarra Symphony Orchestra and the University of Navarra Choir as well as the students of the Theatrical Training Plan and the students of the Performing Arts Production Program. They are joined by the students of the design degree who will design the scenography.
Together with all of them, AGAO members share their know-how with young talents.
Borja Quintas, conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Universidad de Navarra, is responsible for the musical direction of the project and accompanies Liuba Cid, responsible for the adaptation of the text and stage direction.
