THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition of the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz (Sao Paulo, 1961) brings together a selection of works by this artist, with special emphasis on his latest series. In his work, Muniz, who began his career as a sculptor, plays with images and objects to create works that transcend the mere photographic image to generate new readings of reality and its representation. In this way, he reinterprets and rereads iconic works of universal history, as well as family photographs that belong to his personal collection, using various materials without artistic character or connotations, such as chocolate, waste and garbage objects, toys, and in his latest works even bacterial microorganisms. With all this he creates new images, generally with a sculptural and three-dimensional character, from which the final work is generated, which for Muniz is always a photograph.

THE ARTIST

The distinctive practice of Vik Muniz (Sao Paulo, 1961) is the exploration and delight in the instability that exists between artisanal art and mechanical reproduction, between the most sublime art and popular culture, between the ephemeral and the enduring, between the codified and the recognizable. Muniz has participated in numerous solo exhibitions in museums such as the Museo de Arte del Banco de la República (Bogotá), the Beyeler Foundation, P.S. 1 MoMA (NYC), the Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo), MACRO (Rome), the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin) and the Menil Collection (Houston), and his work is included in important private and public collections around the world.
