Kukai Dantza stands out for its exceptional treatment of folklore, myths and traditional rites, which manage to transcend the universal through a contemporary language, staging creations of great poetics and high quality in their execution.

JON MAYA

Jon Maya began his dance career at the age of six in Ereintza Dantza Taldea, a referential name in traditional Basque dance, and a group of which he is still a member today. As an Aurresku dancer, he has won outstanding awards and for several years has been champion of this genre in Euskadi. At the end of the 90's, Jon Maya created the group Laxok together with other entrepreneurs. But it was in 2001 when he founded Kukai Dantza, a company that develops its work from traditional Basque dance; proposing encounters with other dance styles and ways of understanding art. In this way, Kukai creates contemporary shows with its own creations and collaborations with prestigious choreographers. This fact has given him an unmistakable label in the international scene, being more and more frequent his appearances in festivals and programs around the world.

Among his works, the shows created with Tanttaka Teatroa and the collaborations with various choreographers are very well known: Cesc Gelabert, Israel Galvan, Jone San Martín (The Forsythe Ballet), La Intrusa Danza.... Among its numerous awards, the MAX Award to the Revelation Show in 2009 and the two MAX Awards 2015 received by 'Gelajauziak' stand out: Best Musical Composition (Sabin Bikendi) and Best Cast. Kukai Dantza is National Dance Award 2017.
