Cómo hacer cosas con... Mathematics

"To produce a perfect pearl the oyster needs some piece of matter, a grain of sand or a small shard around which it can form. Without this solid nucleus, it can become a formless mass." (E. H. Gombrich)

Following the great historian of the 20th century, who compared the artist to an oyster, in the cycle "How to make things with...", we open to the public the process of composition of the "pearl", asking ourselves each time about the element or material that has served as a splinter.

In continuity with the line opened last year, focused on the search for heritage elements that survive in the heart of contemporary creation, in this new season we find, at the core of the artistic processes explored, other materials, such as Latin sources, documents and mathematics.

With Capi Corrales, Jesús López Fidalgo and Pedro Maisterra

In this session, Capi Corrales, Alexanco's friend and guide in his mathematical incursions, and gallery owner Pedro Maisterra, administrator of the artist's legacy, and Jesús López Fidalgo, professor of Statistics and director of the Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence of the University of Navarra, will discuss the role that mathematical science plays in the painter's work, how he used it, and the meaning of his work from a mathematician's point of view.

Art and mathematics go hand in hand in the work of Alexanco, whose exhibition can be seen in room 0 of the Museum. This artist, with a restless mind, proposed in 1991 to the young doctorate in Number Theory (Capi Corrales) the celebration of private mathematics classes organized "from front to back". Mathematics, geometry and physics meet in the artist's research on movement. 

This conference is part of the Encuentros de Pamplona 72-22 calendar, a cultural event that has brought together various cultural institutions that contribute their own approach to the 50th anniversary of the original Encuentros de Pamplona of '72 promoted by the Huarte family and organized by the ALEA Group, of which Alexanco was a member.
