Seven Lullabies for Grief is a dialogue between sorrow and healing. Lullabies that rock us to sleep, that awaken us to life, that explain grief, and that sing of what heals. Lullabies that restore our voices.
“The day my mother died, I lost my voice”—this is the first confession from the man who steps onto the stage. And that is just one of many sorrows for which he believes there is no longer any consolation. But, alas, the man is mistaken: for each of his sorrows, the voice singing beside him offers a lullaby, transforming that man—and us along with him—into a child who asks to hear a story told in a mother’s voice, so that life does not fade away entirely and the light retains its warmth. From the darkness, a theorbo marks the beat, and when the man falls silent, the voice breathing beside him captures the present and sings it, transforming it into eternity, bringing solace to the human spirit.
Soprano Raquel Andueza and writer Alejandro Palomas join forces—with the collaboration of theorbo player Jesús Fernández Baena—to take us on a musical and philosophical journey exploring consolation, set against the backdrop of seven Mediterranean lullabies. The dawn of the Italian 17th century—also known as the “century of the affections”—embraces this typically Baroque dialogue of light and shadow, which intertwines voice, theorbo, and intimate confession, reinterpreting the lullaby as a source of truth and solace.
