MUN Theatre

Fashion and performing arts, fashion and dance come together in Merina, a show created, directed and produced by the Spanish firm OTEYZA with choreography by Antonio Najarro, music by Tagore Gonzalez and the incredible costumes created by the firm itself. A totally innovative show that goes beyond the classic canon of Spanish dance.

Its commitment and passion for tailoring has led OTEYZA to enter the world of the stage to share with us, through the language of dance and music, the craft and the progression of Spanish textile creation from the origin to the highest avant-garde. The choreographic pieces by Najarro, the music by González, the costumes by OTEYZA, and an impeccable stage design by Príamo Estudio transport us to the origin, the birth of merino wool, and envelop and accompany us throughout the process in which craftsmanship is transformed into art. The dreamed piece becomes reality and moves through time, from the hegemony of the sixteenth century fashion, with its two legendary dyes, the Iberian black and the red just arrived from the new world, to the current pieces of high avant-garde.

Merina is a transversal show where you can find steps from neoclassical ballet to contemporary or urban dance, including stylized dance with nods to the bolero school, flamenco or regional dances.

With Merina, OTEYZA creates a proposal that breaks barriers for its uniqueness, design and Spanish dance united as a form of expression and a common aesthetic.

Candidate for six MAX Awards in the categories of best dance show, best production, best musical composition, best choreography, best scenery and video scenery and best costumes.

OTEYZA

The Spanish men's fashion brand founded by Paul García de Oteyza and Caterina Pañeda, was born in Spain in 2011, breaking the paradigms of the suit world, offering a renewed and balanced image of the progression of men's fashion.

With a store and workshop in Madrid, they develop three lines of activity: traditional tailoring, semi-traditional tailoring and sale and creation of seasonal collections.

OTEYZA collaborates with major Spanish cultural and artistic institutions developing costumes and artistic creations in other scenic areas. We can mention the Thyssen-Bornesmiza Museum, Museo del Traje, Fundación Mapfre, Museo del Prado, Teatro Español, Teatro Real...

Among other awards, they have the National Fashion Award 2019 and Madrid Fashion Capital Award 2021.

ANTONIO NAJARRO

Antonio Najarro (Madrid, 1975) has as his main artistic objective to give visibility and prominence to new trends in dance, establishing a current language and a personal style within this discipline and fusing it with different artistic and sporting expressions.

Dancer and choreographer, trained by the most prestigious dance teachers in all styles: classical ballet, bolero school, Spanish classical, folklore, flamenco and contemporary dance. Graduated with honors in Spanish Dance at the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza Mariemma in Madrid.

He began his professional career at the age of 15. In 1996, he was guest soloist in the work La Gitana, choreographed by José Antonio Ruiz and Paul Chalmer, with the Ballet del'Arena di Verona under the direction of Carla Fracci. He joined the Ballet Nacional de España (BNE) in 1997, under the direction of Aurora Pons, Nana Lorca and Victoria Eugenia and three years later, he was promoted to the category of Prima Ballerina with Aída Gómez in the artistic direction of the company.

His creative vocation soon led him to choreograph and he created his own Antonio Najarro Company in 2002.

Antonio Najarro joined Ballet Nacional de España as Director in 2011. Since his arrival, he has kept alive the enormous cultivated repertoire, opened a path for new creation, and supported and broadened the dissemination of the complex spectrum of national folklore. In addition, Najarro projects an innovative image of the BNE, capable of pleasing its longtime audience but also attracting a new, probably younger, one that feels identified with the renewed proposals of the group.

At the end of his time at the BNE in 2019, he returns with his own Company touring with his show Alento , which starts in Granada and takes him to various theaters and auditoriums. Querencia is the last show of his company.

TAGORE GONZALEZ

Musician, teacher, sound and stage creator, Tagore is a creative with an interdisciplinary spirit. He trained at Musikene, Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and has collaborated for several years with numerous national and international symphony orchestras as a clarinettist.

During his musical training he founded the company Cre.Art Project and began experimenting with the staging of his own concerts, presenting musicians and contemporary music in dialogue with other artistic disciplines. For several years he creates and directs stage projects in genres such as opera, theater, dance, performance or concerts that embrace scenic codes.

In 2014 he started the musical project Nerval, which allows him to investigate with the digital processing of his instruments and electronics and, in turn, explore new ways of expressing himself to the public, creating two shows under the name Fiesta/Siesta/Fiesta that question the boundaries between concert, performance or theatrical work. In recent years he has directed the stage plays "El abismo de los pájaros" and the stage concert "Yo, Piano".

He is currently focused on sound creation and has composed music and sound space for different audiovisual and stage works.
