Andrea Jiménez, a rising star in contemporary theater, explores the intersections between fiction and reality, theater and performance in this irreverent adaptation of William Shakespeare's King Lear. A space to reflect on fatherhood, love, and forgiveness, in a theatrical exercise that is as courageous as it is playful.
“My father is Lear, but he has never set foot in a theater.
I am Cordelia. And I am a theater director.
Like her, I am going to look for Lear, I am going to dare to look at him, and I am going to try to forgive him. And I am going to do it from the stage. Every night, a different actor will be Lear, will be my father, will be a possible father, one who does want to sit in a theater and talk.
This mock version of King Lear aims to be an open door to thinking about how we relate to our parents, both biological and metaphorical, including William Shakespeare himself. It is autofiction based on a classic, or a classic turned into autofiction, or hopefully neither. It is a piece about origins, about how what came before haunts us, even if we want to ignore it. About how those who came before us shape us. About how to invent a life that belongs to you without forgetting the past. About how to imagine other possible endings.
It is also an audition, or a rehearsal, that thing that happens before everything happens, the place just before something takes its exact form. The exact moment when everything is still possible.
