In *Letter to the Editor*, New York filmmaker Alan Berliner continues to explore his signature style of autobiographical documentary, his use of found footage, and his unique take on irony and humor. Taking his concern about the decline of print newspapers as a starting point, he crafts an essay illustrated entirely by his incredible collection of *The New York Times* photographs, archived over the past four decades.

Right from the title, the film plays on double meanings, referencing both the “letters to the editor” section of a newspaper and the filmmaker’s craft. Drawing on this family tradition—which includes his father and grandfather, both tailors, people with a deft touch for cutting and “mending”—the film reflects on how an image, intended to illustrate a news story, can also be poetry or a work of art.
