Photography is a medium often understood as a window to reality. However, the boundaries between reality and fiction are blurred from the beginning.
In a world saturated with images and in which the possibilities and speed of their production are increasing, there is a need to understand the codes of the image and its construction mechanisms. What kind of access to reality does the photographic image constitute?
Possible Constellations. The image as a fragment of reality in the MUN collection highlights the infinity of possible points of view in photography, as well as the multiplicity of visual narratives that configure our imaginaries, trying to achieve a more conscious vision of our relationship with photographs and their diverse modes of construction.
The selected images span the history of the medium from its beginnings in the 19th century, with the oldest work presented in this exhibition dating back to 1851, to the present day, with works generated in 2018. In total, more than one hundred pieces make up the exhibition, belonging to a wide diversity of artistic movements, techniques, authors and themes in keeping with the nature of the MUN's photographic collection. Some of the photographers present in the exhibition are Charles Clifford, Gustave de Beaucorps, José Ortiz Echagüe, Juan Dolcet Santos, Bleda y Rosa or Joan Fontcuberta.
Put in relation, the images in Constelaciones posibles explore the ambiguity present in the photographic medium and invite the viewer to reflect on the different relationships between image, referent and referenced; between reality, truth and verisimilitude. The exhibition offers a discourse that seeks to highlight the polyphony of which visual culture is composed, as well as the role of the spectator in the clarification of the real in photography.
