Theory and Practice of Playwriting

A workshop designed for people interested in developing their skills in playwriting to turn their idea into theater. This workshop is a "toolbox" to approach playwriting. Knowing techniques of dramaturgy that enable talent and inspiration to materialize in theatrical forms. Curiosity, poetry and writing are at the base of this proposal.

Dates: Wednesdays from January 22 to February 19.

Time: 14.30-16.30 h

PROGRAM

 

JANUARY 22: BASIC ELEMENTS OF PLAYWRITING

A - Brief theoretical tour. Plots and subplots. The parts and the whole. The rhythm and the conflict. The synthesis. Inflection points. Collective creation. What story to tell.

B -Main differences and similarities between Classical and Contemporary Theatre

 

JANUARY 29: FROM MIND TO PAPER

A - In the author's voice; Example: reading of a short contemporary work ("Cualquiera resbala") Analysis and comments.

B - Presentation of the proposals that the participants already bring and that they wish to turn into plays or theatrical texts. Practical evaluation and advice

 

 FEBRUARY 5 and 12: CARPENTRY OF THE THE THEATRICAL TEXT

A - Reading and evaluation of the works elaborated by the participants of "first versions".

B- Theatrical finish.  

 

FEBRUARY 19: THE AUTHOR AND HIS WORK

A - The collective, including the tutor, will give voice to the characters in the readings of the different works. Only each author will not be able to participate in his/her own reading. He/she will listen to it and draw his/her own conclusions or ask questions.      

B- Epilogue: Brief general notes on the relationship between Dramaturgy, Production and Staging.

TAUGHT BY...

Carlos Bernal

He is one of the most prolific writers in the Spanish-speaking world thanks to his view of the human condition today, and his mastery in resolving situations and characters rich in interpretative possibilities on stage.

He became an actor at the Teatro Experimental de Cali with Enrique Buenaventura between 1968 and 1978, and for the last 24 years he has moved between Spain and Germany as a director, teacher and playwright.

He develops his work in companies such as the Teatro Experimental de Cali directed by Enrique Buenaventura, Der Alcaravan Theater in Germany, the Tornedals-Teatern in Sweden, Uroc Teatro, the Gayo Vallecano, the Centro Dramático Español or the Teatro de los Sentidos, in Spain.

He has given workshops at the Georg August University and Wolkshohchschule in Germany, the SGAE, the University of Granada, the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de España, the University of Bogotá, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the University of California and the University of North Carolina, among other places.
