HISTORY OF THE MUSICAL
In the strike, known as the 'Newsboy Strike of 1899,' young paperboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan newsies in a fight against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful publishers.
His story served as the inspiration for a film entitled NEWSIES which, after its release in 1992, became a cult phenomenon.
Its popularity grew suddenly and its fans managed to get it released on video and DVD. But they had to wait 20 years until the musical version was released in 2011 with a regional performance permit.
This stage production aroused great interest from the media and the public. Fans of the film and audiences who first discovered it succeeded in bringing the show to Broadway in March 2012 with the intention of staying on for a limited run of 101 performances. Its success led to 1,004 performances before it went on tour. In 2017, after the end of the North American tour the musical was recorded for inclusion in the Netflix catalog.
It was in 2022 and in the Acunsa Theater of the Museo Universidad de Navarra, when for the first time a group of young students recovered the combative spirit and the scenic vigor of a timeless story that continues to arouse passions.
