Pagés has proven to be a pioneer in the understanding of flamenco as an evolving, contemporary and living art, using the fundamental codes of the flamenco language and researching inside and outside of it.

For this Sevillian artist, iconoclast by nature, modernity is tradition in movement. Her creative and aesthetic contribution lies in her serenity in speaking without complexes with all languages and making them accept the hospitality of flamenco.

If there is anything that can define the multifaceted creative singularity of María Pagés, it is her deep-rooted ethical sense of culture. She creates because she is convinced that art entails a profound commitment to life and memory.

"That in María Pagés dwells the genius of dance, we all know it and we proclaim it. But there is something else in this woman: she dances and, by dancing, she moves everything around her.

Neither the air nor the earth is the same after María Pagés has danced."

José Saramago

"In all the arts there is a need for a Pagés."

Roger Salas, dance critic, El País

THE SHOW

Approximate duration 75 minutes without pause

At 53, the choreographer from Seville reflects serenely on life, dance, desire and the body, with its fascinating faculties and infinite fragility.

Óyeme con los ojos is a work that is built around symbolic and dramaturgically very marked scenes, both in its choreographic and musical conception. In it, story and word, rhythm, song and melody, foot tapping and percussion, virile and delicate voices, humor, irony and commitment to life interact fluidly.

The poetry of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Fray Luis de León, San Juan de la Cruz, Ibn Arabi, Rumi, Juan Agustín Goytisolo, Tagore, Mario Benedetti and El Arbi El Harti constitutes the dramaturgical path of that journey to the discovery of the Self facing its nakedness and its nature sculpted by force of shadows and some light that makes it possible for us to glimpse a faint line of happiness to search for it indefinitely.

Óyeme con los ojos is a production of María Pagés Compañía in co-production with Temporada Alta and El Canal.
