Composició amb cistella' at the Guggenheim Bilbao
The work 'Composiciò amb cistella', by the artist Antoni Tàpies, which belongs to the Museum's collection, is on display at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
The exhibition"Antoni Tàpies. From Object to Sculpture (1964-2009)" to be held at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents the sculptural facet of the Catalan artist. Around one hundred works are on display in the halls of Frank Gehry's building until January 19.
The selection covers Tàpies ' entire sculptural and objectual career, showing different techniques and materials. Organized chronologically and thematically, alternating the temporal development with the analysis of the themes, materials and techniques that occupied the artist. The pieces show the characteristic elements of Antoni Tàpies' universe: from his idea of the wall to objects such as chairs, beds or books, which are part of his personal vocabulary and which he transforms into sculptures of monumental features or subtle pieces of small dimensions.
The piece Composiciò amb cistella is one of the most important sculptures in Antoni Tàpies' production. Made in 1996 from a large cardboard box cast in bronze, its aesthetic is apparently poor, within a renewed exercise of the "povera" style, of which Tàpies was a leading figure since his pioneering works of the fifties. This movement, which originated in France, renounced traditional supports by means of the use of industrial waste materials or those of the consumer society, giving importance to chance and irony, and freeing art from the boundaries between art and banality.
