From facade to storefront: MUN gives a new life to tarpaulins by designing an innovative fashion line

The store's new range of products - mainly bags, toiletry bags and aprons - has been made by local suppliers and is a small contribution to the circular economy, for the enjoyment of everyone.

"I was a MUN tarpaulin" is the title of the new range of products in the Museum Shop, which aims to give a second life to the advertising tarpaulins hanging from the building. These, which are normally removed after each season, have been transformed into functional bags and accessories with a strong symbolic charge. This is how Vanessa Bandrés, head of the MUN store, explains this innovative project, which includes aprons, card holders, bread baskets, cases, glasses cases, key rings and placemats.

"Each piece tells a story, as it comes from a specific exhibition," he adds, "which makes each product unrepeatable. In addition to reusing the material, we have redesigned it to adapt it to a new use, combining aesthetics, functionality and sustainability". In this way, the products combine the design of what was an advertising proposal with a back corresponding to the back covers of 19th century books from the MUN collection, with flora and botany motifs.

It is a project that reflects a firm commitment to the circular economy, creativity and care for the environment, and is part of a broader initiative promoted by the Museum Store, based on the principles of Reuse, Repair, Redesign and Recycle. "We want almost all products to actively contribute to the care of the environment and, as far as possible, also to people's health," explains the manager. As a result, they can become a tool "to communicate values, raise awareness and promote more responsible consumption".

This strategy of the MUN store has been recognized, as it earned it the Innovative and Sustainable Design Award for Museum and Cultural Institution Stores, organized by the international congress CM Málaga Culture & Museums, in June 2024.

Giving the gift of experiences

In addition, this Christmas, the MUN also offers the option of giving experiences as gifts. These are the MUN Boxes, which contain various combinations of shows and catering: Christmas MUN contains two tickets for the Christmas Dance Gala on December 27 and for the exhibitions, plus an aperitif in its restaurant; Happy MUN includes two tickets for a show of your choice, access to the exhibition halls and champagne; and MUN Menu combines tickets to the shows and lunch for two people.

MUN Boxes will be available for purchase at the Museum's store from November 17.
