Professor of Art History Francisco Calvo Serraller inaugurated the series "The Museo del Prado: historical milestones of its collections" on the 19th. A meeting organized by the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation and the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra, in collaboration with the Museum of the academic center.

The current director of the Prado Museum's annual lecture series explained that this course seeks to analyze not only the royal legacy, which "is part of the Museum's DNA", but also those masterpieces that have been incorporated since it passed into public hands in the last century and a half. He also recalled that in three years the Prado celebrates its bicentennial: "It is one of the oldest museums in the world and reflects the history of our country".

The intervention of Calvo Serraller, who was director of the Prado between 1993 and 1994, dealt with 'The epic of defeat: Velázquez, Goya, Picasso'. In it, he related 'Las lanzas', 'Los fusilamientos del 2 de mayo' and 'Guernica'; three emblematic pieces of the collection that, in addition to the progressive Spanish decadence, show how the military defeat can become a moral victory.

As a member of the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado, the academic expressed his happiness that the series has come to Pamplona: "The Prado Museum is in Madrid, but it belongs to everyone. Every time an activity travels anywhere in the world, it feels fully realized, and those of us who collaborate with it feel very much at ease".

The series "The Prado Museum: historical milestones of its collections", which will continue every Wednesday until November 30, will show how the collections of this Museum have been configured, through the individualized commentary of some of the masterpieces that have been incorporated.

Following Francisco Calvo Serraller's talk, Miguel Falomir, Deputy Director of Conservation and Research at the Museo del Prado; Rocío Sánchez Ameijeiras, Professor of Art History at the University of Santiago de Compostela; Gonzalo Borrás, Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Zaragoza; Andrés Úbeda, head of Conservation of Italian and French Painting up to 1700 at the Museo del Prado; Manuela Mena, head of Conservation of 18th Century Painting and Goya at the Museo del Prado; and Luis Fernández-Galiano, professor of Projects at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid.

The event, which is also sponsored by Viscofán and with the collaboration of Fundación Diario de Navarra, is part of the existing relationship between the School of Philosophy and Arts and the Fundación de Amigos del Museo del Prado, through student internships and activities carried out by professors from the History of Art Department.
