The Museum brings together in an exhibition some of the latest donations and most relevant acquisitions with works by Chagall, Sorolla, Chillida, Sanz Lobato, Aizpurúa, and Chambi, among others.
"New additions to the Collection" presents an excerpt of the most relevant works of the nearly 5,000 new pieces of photography, painting and sculpture that complete the Museum's Collection since its inauguration. the Museum's Collection since its inauguration
A selection of the 37 most representative works from the Museum's latest donations and acquisitions is on display in the first edition of the periodic exhibition "New additions to the Collection". This initiative represents an important effort in the procurement of works and shows an excerpt of the nearly 5,000 new pieces that are added to the already existing collection since the Museum was inaugurated in January 2015.
The inauguration was attended by about 70 people, including some donors such as the Huarte-Vidal family, the Mexican family Gómez Larasgoiti, artists such as photographers Luis González Palma, who opens tomorrow an exhibition at the Museum, Miguel Bergasa and Carlos Cánovas, representatives of the Government of Navarra as Susana Irigaray, director of the museum service, Pilar Cabodevilla, senior museum technician, and Javier Manzanos, plastic arts technician of the City of Pamplona.
"For the Museum and personally for me, as President of its Board of Trustees, the creation of this exhibition is a very special satisfaction because of the origin of these pieces, 95% of which are the result of donations and bequests. The Museo Universidad de Navarra was born as a result of two large donations and to see that we continue to receive important works thanks to the generosity of many people is very positive," said Ángel Gómez Montoro, President of the Museum's Board of Trustees.
Tender puentes, “el corazón del Museo”
Since the donation of the legacy of photographer José Ortiz Echagüe in 1981, it was decided to broaden the context of this author' s work through artistic collections whose chronology began with the first photographic manifestations and reached the present day. The project and the expansion work were aimed at achieving a Collection of international reference. After almost 20 yearsof meticulous work, where photographs were acquired together with donations of works by the artists themselves or private individuals such as María Josefa Huarte, the best collection of photography in Spain was formed. This collection has received all kinds of awards both nationally and internationally.
The most recent addition comes from the Mexican Gómez Laresgoiti family, which has donated three canvases by Joaquín Sorolla, Marc Chagall and Rufino Tamayo, and a sculpture by Eduardo Chillida. Along with these pieces, there are also the legacies of three important photographers of the 20th century. Rafael Sanz Lobato, winner of the National Photography Prize, donated to the Museum his entire collection of nearly 3,500 photographs and close to 70,000 negatives. The outstanding humanist photographer continues the documentary tradition of the already existing collections of Ortiz Echagüe and Juan Dolcet, offering us a complete panorama of the photography of the second half of the 20th century in Spain. It is an important addition to our Collection," explained Ángel Gómez Montoro, "both in terms of the quality of his works and the amount," he added.
Along with this author, works have also been bequeathed, through his heirs, by very important artists such as the avant-garde José Antonio Aizpurúa, one of the few representatives of the avant-garde in the Basque Country. The donation of his archive consists of 137 originals, two sketchbooks of the artist and his collection of negatives. Also of great importance is the incorporation of 105 photographic prints by Martín Chambi, the most emblematic Peruvian documentary filmmaker of the 20th century. His incorporation to the collection represents the growing presence of Latin American art and, according to Valentín Vallhonrat of the Museum's Artistic Direction Committee, "the opening of another field of work in the development of photography".
Some of the works produced for the artistic creation program have also been incorporated into the Collection, such as those of Pierre Gonnord and Manolo Laguillo. Tender Puentes have also been incorporated into the Collection , such as those by Pierre Gonnord and Manolo Laguillo, a photograph by Carlos Irijalba, donated by the Padula - Blohm Foundation, and a selection of works donated by Javier Vallhonrat and Cristina de Middel, recently exhibited at the Museum and which increase the 21st Century Collection. "These artistic productions that are developed thanks to small residencies for the study and research of photography are the heart of the Museum. This room is an example of the funds with which contemporary artists nourish themselves to produce new pieces," said Valentín Vallhonrat.
In addition to Aizpurúa, the Museum' s avant-garde collection "with which a body of work had yet to be established"has been reinforced with the donation of a photograph by Antoni Arissa and the deposit by a private collector of three works by Josep Sala.
Among the group of acquisitions made directly by the Museum are a daguerreotype and six salt papers by Alphonse De Launay, an albumen paper by Charles Clifford, which complete the extensive holdings of these authors, as well as a 20th century photograph by Inge Morath.
Although it will not be present in the first edition of this exhibition, it is important to highlight the donations of the recently deceased Pere Formiguera and Elena Asins and the legacy of Josep Brangulí, given by Fundación Telefónica and to whom the Museum will dedicate an exhibition starting in November 2016. The work of this photojournalist committed to the reality of the Barcelona of the first half of the twentieth century, offers another side of the coin in front of that avant-garde photography.
