At a time of renewed interest in spirituality, *Diálogos Místicos* offers a theatrical and musical exploration of the mystical phenomenon. It invites audiences to embark on a spiritual, aesthetic, and reflective journey.
The performance explores the dialogue between music and words. Classic texts by Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross engage in a dialogue with recent writings by Simone Weil and Franz Jalics. In turn, the texts of these two great Spanish mystics engage in a dialogue with the music composed for them by prominent 20th-century and contemporary Spanish composers such as Rodrigo, Mompou, and Torres.
Actor Lluis Homar and singer Sonia de Munck, accompanied on the piano by Miguel Huertas, take on various roles in the play that—as in the mystical writings of St. John—could be called the “bridegroom” and the “bride,” and also symbolize the human soul, the divine, or the mortal being in search of meaning. Through the conversations between these characters, the play explores themes such as redemption, grace, spiritual transformation, and, ultimately, the mystical experience.
Dialogue, an essential element of the stage, helps convey the ineffable in an accessible way within a mystical context—without forgetting that “mystical” and “mystery” share the same Indo-European root, *mu-*, a sound produced with closed lips. Thus, when the words fall silent, what remains is the music. And the light. And the performer’s human presence on stage. And the silence.
