PRE-SHOW
Taking Lucan's Pharsalia as a starting point, this choreographic work explores the concept of war from an allegorical approach, putting the body at the service of everyday concepts such as conflict, crisis, resistance, tension or evasion. But the human being is not satisfied with his state of war, and it is there, when the vestiges of beauty, of our hope, appear on the scene.
The Pharsalia or Bellum Civile, by the Cordovan Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39-65 A.D.), is an unfinished epic poem in ten cantos about the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey Magnus that has generated, due to its complex vitality, multiple criticisms, meanings and interpretations throughout history. Its validity today exudes a clear message of invocation to freedom and rejection of tyranny.
But how does a play from more than twenty centuries ago resonate from a contemporary stage perspective? Can beauty be found in the chaos of war?
