Walking East. Hamish Fulton
OPENING 24 MAR - 20:00 H. after the artist's masterclass
24 MAR - 28 AUG
Walking East by Hamish Fulton is a co-production between the Galician centre CGAC (Santiago de Compostela) and the Museo de la Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona). Curator Pep Benlloch.
The exhibition includes the project that Fulton, "the walking artist", has created for the occasion: a route along the Camino from Finisterre, in the direction of Santiago de Compostela, and its continuation towards Pamplona and Roncesvalles, until it reaches Hendaye.
The artist's entire production is born of solitary walking. Fulton does not intervene in the landscape, he walks through it with the attentive gaze of someone who really and actively sees what surrounds him.
The exhibition aims to give an insight into his concerns, which have changed over the years, and are now very much focused on the conservation of the planet. Through art he wishes to contribute to the conservation of the planet.
Since 1969 the artist has been walking around the world. The Iberian Peninsula, Canada, corners of Europe, Australia and Nepal have welcomed Fulton's walks. The artist uses images, text (together or independently), wood, collage or drawing to show the walk, to transmit the path. In this way, physical activity is transformed into matter, into works of art, which convey his vision through these diverse languages.
Concerned about the instrumentalisation of the environment or the landscape, Fulton claims the atavistic act, the direct experience of the walker as a tool of salvation for a humanity that has stopped seeing to look around it through technology.
The visitor will be able to see the artist's different supports along the route, as they all complement each other and fit together to offer a complete vision of what walking is, of its meaning, which is reflected through the works. The viewer is invited to reconstruct the evoked space and the artist's journey. About his works, Fulton speaks of mental sculpture in the sense that they refer, as sculptures, to notions of space, time and matter.
BIOGRAPHY
"I am an artist who walks, not a walker who makes art".

Hamish Fulton, born in 1946 in London, England, lives and works in Canterbury. He trained at Hammersmith College of Art, St. Martin's School of Art and the RCA Royal College of Art among other prestigious institutions. Since the early 1970s, he has travelled the world on foot, 24 countries, hundreds of kilometres, several thousand steps. For him, walking is fundamental, the ephemeral walk is the work of art. Fulton's work differs from American Land Art in its softness, intimacy and great economy of means. He photographs the landscape without intervention or artifice. |
Walking East by Hamish Fulton is a co-production between the Galician center CGAC (Santiago de Compostela) and the Museum of the University of Navarra (Pamplona).
The exhibition shows the project that Fulton, "the walking artist", has carried out for the occasion: a route of the Camino starting from Finisterre, heading to Santiago de Compostela, and its continuation towards Pamplona and Roncesvalles, until it reaches Hendaye.
All the artist's production is born from walking alone. Fulton does not intervene the landscape, he walks through it with the attentive gaze of someone who really and actively sees what surrounds him.
The exhibition aims to give a vision of his concerns, which have been obviously modified over the years, and that currently give a special focus on the conservation of the planet. It is through art that he wishes to contribute to the conservation of the planet.
Since 1969 the artist has been taking walks through various corners of the world. The Iberian Peninsula, Canada, different corners in Europe, Australia or Nepal have assisted Fulton's walk. The artist uses image, text (together or separately), wood, collage or drawing to depict the journey, to transmit it. In this way, physical activity is transformed into matter, into art pieces, that transmit his vision using these different languages.
Concerned about the instrumentalization of the environment or the landscape, Fulton vindicates the atavistic act, the direct experience of the walker as a tool for the salvation of a humanity that has stopped seeing to look around through technology.
The viewer is invited to reconstruct the evoked space and the artist's journey. About his works, Fulton refers to mental sculptures in the sense that they are named, figuring sculptures, to notions of space, time and matter. The visitor will be able to see in this exhibition the different supports used by the artist, since all of them complement and fit together to offer a complete vision of what walking is, of its meaning, that is reflected through Fulton's works.
