Jesús Carmona and Lucía Campillo join the University of Navarra Symphony Orchestra and the University of Navarra Choir in this project, which is unique in terms of its fusion of disciplines and cultures.
Algarabía is a music, dance, and poetry show that builds a bridge between the Arab world and flamenco based on their updated musical, dance, and poetic traditions.
It is written and directed by Ignacio García and Jihad Mikhael. The symphonic music of Manuel de Falla, the great 20th-century Spanish composer whose 150th anniversary will be celebrated in 2026, is a fundamental starting point, including parts of La vida breve, Noches en los jardines de España, El amor brujo and El sombrero de tres picos. Alongside Falla, the music of Emirati composer Ihab Darwish joins Josema García Hormigo's newly created score to establish echoes with Arabic and flamenco music. The performance by 80 young people from the University of Navarra Choir and Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Borja Quintas, is complemented by the flamenco ensemble composed of Manuel Masaedo, Antonio González Reyes, and Belén Vega, with the participation of Aya El Dika on traditional Arabic instruments.
The choreography by Jesús Carmona will be danced by Carmona himself, winner of the Benois de la Danse Award, and his partner Lucía Campillo, together with a flamenco dance troupe.
Music and dance give shape to a story of diversity and encounter that spans the centuries, with poetry by Nizar Qabbani and Miguel Hernández, or the medieval poets Ibn Zamrak and San Juan de la Cruz, alongside traditional songs that fuse Arabic poetry with the musical tradition of Al-Andalus. These will be recited or sung in their original languages by both the Arab performers, Cynthya Karam and Rafic Ali Ahmad, as well as by the singer Belén Vega.
A carefully staged production under the artistic direction of Liuba Cid, in collaboration with students from the University of Navarra.
SYNOPSIS
The show tells the story of a young Arab botanist (Cynthya Karam) who embarks on a journey of discovery to the Alhambra in Granada, studying the ancient botanical theory of flowers. She is accompanied in this work by her Spanish colleague and friend Candela (Lucía Campillo). Her intellectual approach contrasts with the instinctive love that a Spanish florist (Jesús Carmona) has for flowers, their aromas, and colors...
