Todo es verdad. ficciones y documentos (1987-2020)
Jorge Ribalta
19 OCT - 12 MAR
October 19 to March 12
Floor -1
This first 'total' presentation of Jorge Ribalta's work acquires a new significance in the Museum's space after its passage through the Mapfre Foundation.
The retrospective brings together, in an unprecedented way, more than three decades of work in the photographic field, exploring the disruptions and continuities of an artistic biography of great originality. It includes the work done by the author for the Museum's artistic residency project Tender Puentes , Scrambling, carried out in the Alhambra in Granada and inspired by an image by Charles Clifford belonging to the MUN Collection.
The exhibition shows the evolution of the artist, a trajectory that begins in 1987 and presents a turning point in 2005. The passage from an illusionist photography, which poetically explores naturalism, to a photography that addresses the reinvention of documentary photography from 2005 and reaches the present. Two conceptions of photography that give rise to two types of work that can even be perceived as opposites. Reviewing such a long period of time by the hand of an artist like Ribalta inevitably leads us to travel with him not only his own career, but also the era in which it is inscribed.
Following the chronological order, it also opens up lines of flight that allow us to experience how every historical account is in fact a retrospective construction.
The serial logic and large sets of images of the exhibition does not allow for the identification of those iconic or emblematic images that the visitor might expect in such a broad temporal tour. In this sense, it is conceived as a succession of environments, a journey of different intensities.
The title is inspired, as it could not be otherwise, by Orson Welles' famous unfinished documentary It's All True (1941-1943), a material that has generated important debates over the last decades.
This project has been co-produced with the Mapfre Foundation.
BIOGRAPHY

JORGE RIBALTA (Barcelona, 1963) is a curator, art critic, photographer and writer. He has worked in archival and historical research and also in publishing. He won several photography awards in his youth before devoting several years mainly to curating. He has now returned to photographic practice with series in which he makes observations on the cultural field understood and presented as the result of the intersection of art, politics, economics and history.
For the artist, photography is part of things, a fossil; but the montage, which relates the images, brings them back to life.
Between 1999 and 2009 he directed the Public Programs department of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) and has edited several reference books. He has been a regular contributor to La Vanguardia and advisor to the photography collection of the Gustavo Gili publishing house. He regularly publishes articles and essays in various media.
